BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication repairs for gate operators, brackets, and mounting hardware across Los Angeles, with most jobs running $280-$650 installed depending on material gauge and access. Same-day service is available when the failure is structural or safety-related. Most BFT owners in Los Angeles discover a welding issue when their gate starts sagging on the hinge side, the operator arm pulls away from its mount, or the track welds on a slide gate begin cracking after years of vibration against the concrete pad.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT welding and fabrication work covers the full range of Italian-manufactured operators we see in Los Angeles, from the compact Deimos BT A and Phobos BT A swing-gate actuators to the heavy-duty Ares Ultra BT A and ICARO MA industrial slide-gate systems. The mounting brackets, custom adapter plates, and structural welds that fail are rarely universal; BFT uses metric bolt patterns and European steel gauges that don’t always mate cleanly with American gate frames fabricated to inch specs.
To identify your exact setup, check the silver data plate on the operator motor housing for the model series and production date. The bracketry changed slightly around 2017 when BFT shifted from painted steel to zinc-plated hardware on residential units. We carry both OEM BFT mounting kits and quality aftermarket equivalents fabricated to match; for coastal Los Angeles properties within five miles of the Pacific, we typically recommend the zinc-plated or stainless option even if the original was standard steel, since salt air accelerates bracket corrosion by roughly half the normal lifespan.
Portcullis Gate Repair is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with BFT or its parent company.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate sag or visible gap at the hinge post. The weld connecting the hinge plate to the post begins cracking under cyclical load, especially common on steel-framed gates in the San Fernando Valley where summer expansion and winter contraction stress the joint.
- Operator arm movement without corresponding gate motion. The actuator mounting bracket has pulled its welds loose from the gate frame or post, so the motor runs but the force goes nowhere. We see this regularly on older BFT Phobos installations where the original installer used spot welds instead of continuous bead.
- Grinding or scraping sound during open/close cycles. A twisted or separated track weld on a slide gate lets the gate shoe ride against bare concrete or the guide post instead of the U-channel track.
- Visible rust streaks below any welded joint. In Los Angeles, this usually means moisture has penetrated a cracked weld; the rust is the symptom, but the crack is the structural problem waiting to fail completely.
- Gate hits the stop hard or overshoots its limit. When the mechanical stop bracket welds fail, the operator can’t find its home position reliably and the limit switches become meaningless.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In the Los Angeles market, BFT welding and fabrication repair typically breaks down as follows:
- Bracket re-weld or reinforcement: $280-$420
- Custom adapter plate fabrication and install: $380-$550
- Slide gate track section replacement with welding: $450-$650
- Post or column weld repair with structural reinforcement: $520-$780
What drives the range is access (can we get a welding rig to the gate?), material thickness (ornamental iron versus standard steel tube), and whether we’re matching existing work or starting fresh. Every quote is written and agreed before we strike an arc. The Kingswell Guarantee covers our welding and fabrication work for 365 days; if a weld cracks or a bracket fails in that window, we return and correct it at no charge. Written price first, work second - that’s the only order that makes sense.
DIY or Call Us?
An owner can safely check for the symptoms above: look for cracks, test for play in the gate by hand, and note whether the operator runs without moving the leaf. What you shouldn’t attempt is structural welding on a loaded gate frame or any repair involving the operator’s high-torsion spring assist, present on heavier BFT swing units. A gate under tension can shift unpredictably when a weld breaks, and the 230V electrical supply to the operator doesn’t care if you’re holding a ground clamp.
We carry MIG and stick welding rigs, plasma cutters, and a stock of metric-grade hardware on our Los Angeles service trucks. Most BFT bracket repairs we can complete in one visit. Call (940) 412-7340 and we’ll give you a real price range over the phone before we dispatch.
FAQs
Inland Los Angeles properties typically see 12-18 years from quality structural gate welds before cracking appears; within three miles of the coast, salt air and morning fog cut that to 8-12 years. Regular hinge lubrication and keeping vegetation clear of the frame slows corrosion at the welds. Call (940) 412-7340 for a free inspection if you’re past the decade mark.
Most cracked mounting brackets can be ground out and re-welded if the steel hasn’t thinned from rust; we make that call on site. If the bracket is a BFT-specific cast piece with a fatigue crack through the bolt hole pattern, replacement is the safer route. We stock common BFT bracket profiles and can fabricate adapters for obsolete units.
Standard bracket re-welds run 90 minutes to two hours on site; track section replacement or post repair with cure time for galvanizing touch-up typically runs half a day. We schedule a real arrival window, not an all-day wait. Dean Prescott and our technicians arrive in uniform and background-checked.
Yes. We carry metric bolts, BFT-specific mounting templates, and common bracket profiles on every Los Angeles service truck, plus welding consumables matched to the steel gauges BFT uses. For custom ornamental work, we fabricate to spec in our shop and return to install. Call (940) 412-7340 to confirm same-day availability for your model.
