BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Most BFT gate motor replacements in Los Angeles run between $1,150 and $2,400 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping a single swing arm or a full underground hydraulic system for a dual-slide commercial setup. We stock BFT-compatible motors for the common residential series on our trucks, and we can typically diagnose and quote the replacement same-day. You’ll usually notice the problem first as intermittent stopping, a motor that hums without moving the gate, or a complete no-response after rain.
Dean Prescott, our owner, has been working on BFT operators across Los Angeles County since the early 2010s. He’s seen how the Santa Ana winds and summer dust cycles wear down these Italian-built units differently than domestic brands.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT organizes its gate motors into clear series lines, and the replacement part you need depends on which series is bolted to your gate.
For swing gates, the most common units in Los Angeles are the Phobos (residential, articulated arm), Ares (underground hydraulic for concealed install), and ELI (linear screw-driven, heavier residential to light commercial). The Phobos BT A40 and A50 variants show up constantly in Hollywood Hills and Pasadena hillside homes where space is tight. The Ares Ultra is popular in Hancock Park and Hancock Park-adjacent neighborhoods where homeowners want the motor hidden entirely below grade.
For slide gates, we replace Deimos and ICARO series motors regularly. The Deimos BT A600 covers most residential driveway slides up to 1,800 pounds. The ICARO MA handles the heavier commercial jobs, like apartment complex gates in Koreatown or Mid-Wilshire.
To identify your unit, check the silver BFT data plate on the motor housing. You’ll see the model name, a 10-digit serial number, and the production date code. The date matters: BFT revised its control board pinouts after 2019, so a 2017 Phobos won’t accept a 2023 replacement motor without also swapping the control unit or using a compatibility harness. That’s a detail that trips up some parts suppliers.
We source both OEM BFT motors and select quality aftermarket equivalents. For residential swing arms, the aftermarket units we carry meet the same torque and duty-cycle specs but typically run 15-20% less. For underground hydraulic systems like the Ares, we generally recommend OEM only. The seal tolerances and oil viscosity ratings are specific, and Los Angeles temperature swings, while mild, still stress aftermarket seals over time.
Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- The motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the capacitor has failed or the gearbox has stripped internally. On BFT units, the capacitor is integrated into the motor housing on Phobos and Deimos models, so the whole motor assembly typically gets replaced rather than field-repaired.
- Intermittent operation, especially after morning dew or rain. BFT motors vent through a breather port on the housing. In Los Angeles, that fine dust from the Santa Monica Mountains or San Gabriel Valley foothills mixes with moisture and cakes the internal limit switch. The motor thinks it’s reached its travel limit and shuts down prematurely.
- The gate moves slower than it used to, or stalls on slight inclines. Worn brushes in the DC motor reduce torque output. BFT brushes are rated for roughly 15,000 cycles under normal load, but gates in Beachwood Canyon or the Hollywood Hills that fight gravity on a slope burn through them faster. By the time you notice the slowdown, the commutator is usually scored too.
- Error codes flashing on the BFT control board. A steady red or alternating flash pattern often points to motor overcurrent. The control board detects the motor drawing more amps than spec, which happens when bearings seize or the internal gearbox binds. Continuing to cycle it will burn out the control board, turning a motor replacement into a motor-plus-board replacement.
- Visible oil leaking from an Ares or other hydraulic unit. Underground hydraulic motors rely on a sealed oil reservoir. Once the main seal goes, dirt enters the system and scoring follows fast. In the clay-heavy soils of parts of Los Feliz or the old alluvial deposits near the Los Angeles River, ground shift can stress the seal housing and accelerate this failure.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Application | Typical Installed Range | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Single swing, Phobos BT (residential) | $1,150 - $1,650 | Motor, mounting hardware, limit switch programming, safety device test |
| Dual swing, two Phobos arms | $1,950 - $2,400 | Both motors, synchronized control programming, photo-eye alignment |
| Single slide, Deimos BT A600 | $1,350 - $1,850 | Motor, rack gear inspection, limit magnet replacement if worn |
| Underground hydraulic, Ares Ultra | $1,800 - $2,400+ | Motor, oil fill, excavation and re-sealing, concrete collar repair if needed |
What drives the range? Three things: motor spec (torque rating and duty cycle), whether we need to modify the mounting bracket for a newer model year, and how accessible the install is. An Ares buried in a tight masonry pit in a 1920s Pasadena driveway takes longer than a surface-mounted Phobos on a modern post.
We give you the full price in writing before we unbolt anything. Written price first, work second - that’s the only order that makes sense. Every BFT motor replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, stamped on the invoice. If the motor fails or the gate drifts out of limit within that year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s a hard stop.
What you can check safely: verify the breaker hasn’t tripped, confirm the manual release key still disengages the motor (proving the mechanical linkage is intact), and look for obvious obstructions in the gate track or arm path. If you have a multimeter and know how to use it, checking for 120V at the operator input terminals takes 30 seconds and rules out a simple power issue.
Where DIY goes wrong: BFT motors are high-torque, 24V DC units with internal spring-loaded reduction gears. The manual release stores residual tension. We’ve seen homeowners in the San Fernando Valley get fingers caught when the release snaps back. Beyond the physical risk, BFT limit switches require programming through a specific sequence of button presses on the control board. Get it wrong and the gate can close with excessive force or ignore the safety photo-eye entirely. That’s a liability issue in Los Angeles, where pool enclosures and pedestrian gates have strict ASTM F2200 compliance requirements.
We’re not affiliated with BFT - we’re an independent service provider - but we’ve replaced enough of their motors across Los Angeles to know the programming quirks of each series. If you’re staring at a flashing error code or a gate that won’t budge, call (940) 412-7340. We’ll diagnose it and give you a written price before any work starts.
FAQs
Most BFT residential motors last 10 to 15 years in Los Angeles conditions, though we’ve seen Phobos units fail at 8 years in beach-adjacent properties where salt air corrodes the housing seals, and we’ve seen Ares hydraulics push 18 years in dry, stable inland neighborhoods like Studio City. The 15,000-cycle brush rating translates to roughly 12-14 years of typical residential use. Call (940) 412-7340 and we can assess your specific unit’s remaining life based on its cycle counter and environment.
Sometimes, but rarely economically. Capacitor failure on older Phobos units can be repaired if the part is still available, but BFT has obsoleted several capacitor sub-assemblies. Gearbox rebuilds require factory tooling we don’t carry, because the labor cost approaches replacement. We always check, and we’ll tell you honestly if repair makes sense. If replacement is the better value, we’ll show you both options in writing. Call (940) 412-7340 for a free assessment.
A standard surface-mounted Phobos or Deimos replacement takes 2 to 3 hours from truck arrival to final safety test. Underground Ares units take 4 to 6 hours because of excavation, oil handling, and re-sealing. We don’t rush the limit programming or the force-testing - both are required for safe operation. For installation timelines on new gate motor systems, we schedule a free measure first; we don’t promise same-day installation on new builds.
We carry BFT-compatible replacement motors for the Phobos, Deimos, and common Ares configurations on our Los Angeles-area trucks. For older ELI screw-drive units or specialized high-cycle ICARO commercial motors, we may need to source overnight from our supplier. We’ll tell you before we dispatch whether your specific model is on the truck or needs ordering. Call (940) 412-7340 with your model number and we’ll confirm availability.
