DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install replacement gate motors for DoorKing slide and swing operators across Los Angeles, with most residential jobs running $890-$1,450 installed depending on the model series and whether the gearbox assembly needs swapping too. Same-day replacement is available when we have your specific motor in the van, which we do for the 6000, 8000, and 9000 series that dominate the San Fernando Valley and Pasadena installations from the 2005-2015 boom. Most owners figure out something’s wrong when the gate starts that low, grinding hum but doesn’t move, or moves six inches and quits like it’s hit a wall it can’t see.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has used three major motor platforms in the Los Angeles market, and getting the right one means reading the label inside the operator cabinet, not guessing from the gate size.

The 6000 series (6050, 6100, 6150) uses a 1/2 HP brushed DC motor with an integrated worm-gear reducer. These were the workhorses of mid-2000s residential slide gates in Granada Hills and Northridge. The motor and gearbox ship as a single sealed unit from DoorKing, though we also carry a quality aftermarket equivalent from US Automatic that fits the mounting pattern and saves roughly $180 on parts if the customer prefers.

The 8000 series (8050, 8100, 8200) stepped up to a 3/4 HP motor with a separate, serviceable gearbox. This is where DIYers get tripped up: the motor itself can fail while the gearbox is fine, but the coupling between them wears out and mimics a motor failure. We’ve seen plenty of good motors replaced when it was actually a $34 coupling. Dean Prescott checks this first on every 8000-series diagnostic in Los Angeles.

The 9000 series (9150, 9200, 9600) uses a brushless DC motor with an encoder board. These are commercial-grade units common in West LA condo complexes and Hollywood Hills estates. The motor itself rarely fails; it’s usually the encoder or the driver board. We carry both OEM DoorKing motors and rebuilt units with a 2-year parts warranty for the 9000 line.

Portcullis Gate Repair is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DoorKing. We source OEM parts through authorized distributors and also stock tested aftermarket equivalents where they make sense.

Signs Your DoorKing Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate hums but won’t budge. The motor is getting power and trying to turn, but the gearbox has seized or the motor capacitor has failed. In Los Angeles, this often follows a rainy January when water gets past the cabinet gasket and sits in the gear housing. We see this every winter in canyon-adjacent properties from Laurel Canyon to Topanga.
  • The gate moves a few inches, then reverses or stops dead. The motor is producing torque but not enough to overcome the load. Usually the motor windings are degrading, or the start capacitor has dropped below 80% of rated microfarads. On DoorKing 8000-series units, we also check for a cracked motor-to-gearbox coupling before condemning the motor.
  • Intermittent operation that gets worse on hot afternoons. Brushed motors in the 6000 series develop high resistance in the armature as the commutator wears. Heat expands the already-loose fit, and the motor stalls. This is classic behavior in the San Gabriel Valley, where 95-degree days are common from July through October.
  • A burning electrical smell from the operator cabinet. The motor windings are overheating, usually from running stalled against a mechanical obstruction or from internal shorting. Shut the breaker off and call us. Continuing to cycle it risks fire damage to the control board, which turns a motor replacement into a full operator rebuild.
  • The motor runs but the gate doesn’t move, accompanied by grinding noise. The gearbox output shaft has stripped or the internal gears have shattered. On DoorKing units, the motor often survives this but gets replaced anyway because the gearbox and motor are sold as an assembly on the 6000 series, or because metal shards have contaminated the motor bearings.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we charge for DoorKing gate motor replacement in Los Angeles, with the price agreed in writing before any work starts:

Service Parts Range Labor Total Installed
6000-series motor/gearbox assembly (OEM) $420-$580 $320 $740-$900
6000-series motor/gearbox (aftermarket equivalent) $240-$340 $320 $560-$660
8000-series motor only (OEM) $380-$520 $380 $760-$900
8000-series motor + gearbox service $480-$640 $480 $960-$1,120
9000-series brushless motor (OEM) $680-$920 $420 $1,100-$1,340
9000-series encoder/driver board (if needed) $180-$340 $180 $360-$520
Additional: limit switch replacement $45-$85 $120 $165-$205

What drives the range: motor availability (OEM vs. aftermarket), whether the gate is single or dual swing (dual requires two motors), and whether we find secondary damage like a cracked gearbox housing or fried control board. We always inspect the full operator while we’re in there. Written price first, work second - that’s the only order that makes sense.

Every DoorKing motor replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, written on the invoice. If the motor fails within that year, we come back and fix it at no charge, including the service call.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where you need a technician.

What you can check safely: verify the gate isn’t physically obstructed, confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped, and look for obvious damage like a disconnected chain or a snapped belt on the operator. If your DoorKing has a manual release, you can test whether the gate moves freely by hand. If it doesn’t, the problem is mechanical, not the motor.

Where DIY goes wrong: DoorKing motors are heavy, the 9000-series units run on 240V in many commercial installations, and the high-torque gearbox can snap fingers if the gate shifts while you’re working. We’ve also seen homeowners swap in a motor that “looks right” but has the wrong shaft diameter or rotation direction, destroying the new unit in the first cycle. The control board settings for force limits and travel distance need recalibration after any motor swap; guess wrong and the gate can crush a vehicle or a person.

We carry DoorKing-compatible motors on every service van in Los Angeles. Call (940) 412-7340 and we’ll confirm your model over the phone, quote the exact price, and schedule the replacement.
