Linear Gate Motor Replacement: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Linear gate motor replacement in Los Angeles typically runs $680-$1,450 installed for a residential swing or slide operator, depending on gate weight, voltage setup, and whether the existing control board can be reused. We stock Linear-compatible motors and actuator assemblies for same-day swap-outs across the San Fernando Valley, Hollywood Hills, and Pasadena corridor. Most calls start the same way: the gate opens halfway, groans, or stops responding to the remote entirely - and the motor’s thermal overload has finally given up after years of 90-degree summer cycles.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear gate motors fall into three main series you’ll see around Los Angeles properties, and matching the right replacement means checking the data plate inside the operator housing - not just eyeballing the arm.

Actuator-style swing operators: The LA-500, LA-650, and LA-850 residential swing-gate actuators use a 24V or 120V DC motor inside a sealed tube. The LA-500 handles gates up to 500 lbs; the LA-650 steps up to 16 ft and 650 lbs; the LA-850 is your heavy ornamental-iron motor for dual-swing setups up to 1,800 lbs total. The mounting bracket bolt pattern differs between series - an LA-500 motor won’t bolt to an LA-850 bracket without drilling, which we don’t recommend.

Slide operators: The SL-150, SL-250, and SL-350 rack-driven slide motors share a similar chassis but run different gear ratios. The SL-150 uses a 1/2 HP motor; the SL-250 and SL-350 step up to 3/4 and 1 HP respectively. Here’s the gotcha: early SL-150 units (pre-2014) used a 6-pinion drive gear that’s now obsolete. If your data plate shows a serial starting with “13” or lower, the replacement motor assembly must include the updated 8-pinion gear or the rack won’t mesh cleanly.

Control boards: Linear’s Smart DC board (used across LA, LS, and some early RSW series) often gets blamed when it’s actually the motor drawing excess amperage. We test both before quoting replacement - no point in swapping a motor if the board’s MOSFETs are fried.

We’re an independent service provider - not affiliated with Linear - but we carry both OEM Linear motors and quality aftermarket equivalents where the spec matches. For most residential jobs in Los Angeles, a spec-matched aftermarket motor saves $180-$320 without sacrificing the 3-year parts warranty we include on every install.

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate opens 6 inches and stalls. The motor’s start capacitor is holding just enough charge for initial movement, but the run winding can’t sustain torque. In Los Angeles, this often traces back to thermal cycling - the motor housing hits 140°F+ in direct summer sun, degrading the capacitor electrolyte over 4-6 years.
  • Intermittent response: works at 8 a.m., dead by 2 p.m. This is the thermal overload cutout doing its job, then resetting overnight. The motor is drawing excessive amperage because the bearings are seizing or the armature windings are shorting. We see this pattern constantly in hillside properties above Studio City where gates cycle 15+ times daily.
  • Loud grinding or gear chatter, especially on cold mornings. The bronze worm gear inside the actuator tube has lost lubrication or the motor’s output bearing has walked. Linear actuators use a sealed gear train that’s not owner-serviceable - once the grease breaks down, metal-on-metal wear accelerates fast.
  • Remote clicks, control board lights up, but zero motor movement. The motor’s internal thermal fuse has blown, or the brush assembly has worn to the limit. On Linear DC motors, brushes typically last 6,000-10,000 cycles in Los Angeles conditions - less if the gate’s out of balance and the motor’s working harder on every cycle.
  • Gate drifts closed after reaching the open limit. The motor’s holding brake has failed. Linear slide operators use an electromagnetic brake that engages when power cuts; if the brake disc is glazed or the coil is weak, gravity takes over - a real liability on sloped driveways in the Hollywood Hills.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range (Los Angeles)
Linear residential swing motor (LA-500/650 series), installed $680-$950
Linear heavy-duty swing motor (LA-850 or dual-kit), installed $1,050-$1,450
Linear slide motor (SL-150/250/350), installed $820-$1,280
Control board replacement (if needed) $340-$520 additional
Post-install travel limit programming & safety check Included

What moves the needle: gate weight and length (heavier = bigger motor), 120V vs. low-voltage wiring run distance, and whether the existing mounting hardware is corroded from coastal marine air in Marina del Rey or San Pedro. Every quote we write breaks out parts, labor, and any board work separately - you’ll see the number and approve it before we touch a bolt. Written price first, work second - that’s the only order that makes sense. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the motor and our labor for 365 days; if it fails, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. An owner can check the data plate model, verify the gate moves freely by hand (disconnected from the operator), and confirm the breaker hasn’t tripped. What we don’t recommend: opening the actuator tube, working on 120V hardwired connections, or attempting to set electronic limit switches without a meter. Linear motors store residual torque in the gear train - the actuator can snap closed if the gate’s loaded or the spring-return mechanism catches. We’ve seen finger injuries and gate damage from well-meaning DIY attempts in the Valley.

If your motor’s clicking, grinding, or thermaling out, the failure’s already progressed past adjustment. Call (940) 412-7340 - we’ll diagnose it on-site, quote the replacement in writing, and typically complete the swap same-day if we have your model in the truck. Dean Prescott and our technicians carry LA, SL, and Smart DC components for most common Linear setups across Los Angeles County.
