Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

Linear gate operators in Los Angeles typically need welding and fabrication work when mounting brackets crack, actuator arms bend, or the main frame welds fail at stress points - most jobs we complete run $340-$780 installed, depending on whether we’re repairing a single bracket or fabricating a new actuator mount from scratch. We stock common Linear-compatible steel stock and hardware on our trucks, and most fabrication repairs in the Los Angeles area are done same-day. Homeowners usually discover the problem when their gate starts grinding, hangs at an angle, or the operator runs but the gate barely moves because the mounting hardware has separated from the post.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear welding and fabrication issues show up across the full operator lineup, but we see them most often on the Linear ACT-31 and Linear ACT-34 swing-gate actuators, the SLC-111 slide-gate series, and the older Delta 3 and Delta 5 residential systems still running in neighborhoods like Encino and Granada Hills. The mounting brackets on these units use 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch steel plate, and when they crack, you can’t just bolt on a generic replacement - the hole spacing, actuator geometry, and load angles are specific to each series.

To identify your exact model, check the silver data label on the operator housing. The part number starts with the series prefix - ACT for swing arms, SLC for slide operators, OSCO for commercial slide units. Measure your bracket’s center-to-center hole spacing with a tape measure; Linear swing brackets typically run 4.5 inches or 6 inches, and mixing those up means your actuator will bind within a week. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear, so we’ll tell you straight when an OEM bracket is worth the premium or when a fabricated equivalent from 3/16-inch A36 steel will outlast the original. In coastal zones like Marina del Rey or San Pedro, we spec hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated hardware because the salt air chews through standard paint in eighteen months.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate droops or sits crooked when closed. This usually means the bottom actuator bracket has cracked at the weld or pulled its bolts through a rotted jamb post. The operator keeps trying to pull square, but the gate frame is no longer aligned with the track or stop post.
  • You hear grinding or metal-on-metal scraping during open/close cycles. The actuator arm is likely contacting the gate frame because a mounting tab has bent or a weld has failed, shifting the operator’s geometry. Running it this way strips the internal gears.
  • The operator runs but the gate barely moves, or stalls mid-travel. The mechanical connection between operator and gate has partially failed - a cracked clevis mount, separated bracket, or broken weld is absorbing the force instead of transferring it.
  • Visible cracks in paint or rust lines around bracket welds. These are stress fractures propagating through the heat-affected zone. In the San Fernando Valley’s heat-cycling climate, expansion and contraction accelerate this; we’ve replaced brackets in Northridge that looked fine in March and snapped by August.
  • The gate bounces or shudders at the end of its travel. A loose or cracked mounting assembly lets the entire operator housing shift, so limit switches can’t find consistent stopping points. The “fix” is never adjusting the limits - it’s securing the mount.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range (Los Angeles) What’s Included
Single bracket weld repair $340-$480 Grind, re-weld, prime/paint; hardware inspection
Custom bracket fabrication (single) $480-$680 Measure, cut, drill, weld, finish; install and align
Actuator arm straightening or replacement $520-$780 Remove, straighten or fabricate new, reinstall, test cycle
Full post/jamb rebuild with new mounts $780-$1,400 Concrete work, steel fabrication, operator remount, alignment

What drives the range: material thickness (1/4-inch costs more than 3/16-inch but lasts longer on heavy gates), access difficulty (tight side yards in Los Feliz take longer than open driveways in Chatsworth), and whether we can reuse your existing operator or need to pull it for bench work. We quote the full price in writing before striking an arc - parts, labor, finish, and tax. No after-the-fact additions. Every fabrication repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a weld cracks or a bracket fails, we come back and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list of things a homeowner can safely check. Verify the gate moves freely by hand with the operator disconnected - if it binds, the problem might be track or hinge alignment, not the mount. Tighten any loose bolts with a socket set, but don’t over-torque; Linear brackets use Grade 5 hardware, and snapping a bolt off in a post is a fast way to turn a $400 job into an $800 one.

Where DIY goes wrong: welding gate brackets involves structural loads, and a cold weld or wrong rod choice means the bracket fails when your gate is wide open at 11 PM. Cutting and drilling steel without proper fixtures creates ragged holes that wallow out under load. And anything involving the actuator arm or main frame puts you under a heavy gate with tension in the system. We carry liability insurance and workers’ comp for a reason. Written price first, work second - that’s the only order that makes sense. Call (940) 412-7340 and we’ll give you a real number before we head out.
