Common Questions

Do I need experience in gate repair or construction to open a Portcullis location?

No. We’ve built our training program for owners who are good with people and systems, not necessarily wrench-turners. Our field training covers gate operator diagnostics, welding basics, access control wiring, and the nine brands we service: LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Viking, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule. You’ll hire technicians with the trade skills; your job is to run the business, stand behind The Kingswell Way, and make sure every customer gets the written price, the real arrival window, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

What is the total investment range to open a Portcullis Gate Repair franchise?

The total initial investment typically falls between $85,000 and $175,000, depending on whether you start from a home office or lease a small shop, your local vehicle and equipment costs, and the marketing needed to establish your territory. That range covers your franchise fee, initial vehicle and tool inventory, technology systems, and your first few months of operating capital. We give you the full line-item breakdown during our disclosure conversations, not after you’ve already committed.

Is financing available, and what are the typical requirements?

Most of our owners use a combination of personal investment, SBA-backed loans, and equipment financing to fund their start. We have relationships with lenders who understand the Kingswell model and the recurring revenue that comes from repair work and ongoing maintenance agreements. You’ll generally need a credit score above 680, liquid capital of at least $50,000, and a net worth that supports the loan. We don’t make the loan, but we do introduce you to people who know our numbers and have funded our owners before.

How large is my protected territory, and is it truly exclusive?

Your territory is defined by population density and drive-time practicality, not arbitrary lines on a map. In a mid-size market, that usually means 200,000 to 400,000 residents. You have exclusive rights to operate under the Portcullis Gate Repair name within that boundary. No other Kingswell company will open there, and we don’t sell overlapping territories. The portcullis was built to defend a specific entrance; your territory works the same way.

How long is the initial training, and where does it happen?

Three weeks total. Two weeks at our headquarters working through operations, pricing software, the Kingswell customer call flow, and hands-on gate operator training with each of the nine brands. One week in an operating Portcullis market riding with a veteran owner, watching how they handle the “check engine light” calls, the emergency after-hours dispatches, and the conversations where a customer needs to hear the price before anyone touches a bolt. You’ll also spend time on the phone lines so you understand what our live-answer system feels like from the customer’s side.

What ongoing fees or royalties should I expect?

There is a monthly royalty based on gross revenue, currently set at a percentage common to home-service franchises but specific to your disclosure document. There is also a modest monthly technology and marketing fund contribution that covers your operating software, the national brand presence that drives inbound calls, and the ongoing training updates. We don’t hide these numbers behind a conversation wall; they’re laid out plainly before you spend a dollar on legal review.

How long does it take to open my doors after I sign?

Most owners are operational within 60 to 90 days of signing. That includes finalizing territory, securing your service vehicle, completing training, hiring your first technician, and launching local marketing. The gate repair business doesn’t require a long lease build-out or permitting delay; your truck is your shop. We’ve had owners take calls within three weeks of finishing training. The limiting factor is usually how quickly you want to move, not how quickly we can get you ready.

What support do I get after I’m open?

Field support visits twice yearly minimum, a dedicated operations coach on speed dial, nightly reporting dashboards that show your call volume, conversion rate, and average ticket, and a peer network of other Kingswell owners who share what’s working in their markets. When LiftMaster releases a new operator or a local code changes, we get you the update before your first customer asks about it. The Kingswell Guarantee is the same everywhere, but the support is personal to your shop.

What does the ideal Portcullis owner look like?

Someone who has been burned by a broken promise before and refuses to run a business that way. Our best owners have managed people, owned a service business, or sold something where trust was the whole transaction. They don’t need to be the best technician in the room, but they do need to be the person who makes sure the price is written, the window is real, the job site is clean, and the guarantee is honored. If you’ve ever fired a customer because they asked you to cut a corner, you’ll fit here.

What’s my next step if I want to move forward?

Call us at (940) 412-7340. A real person answers, 24 hours a day, even on holidays. We’ll send you our franchise information package, schedule a call with our development team, and if it makes sense for both sides, invite you to spend a day with an operating owner. There’s no application fee to start the conversation, and we don’t pressure for a decision. The portcullis only lowers when both sides agree it’s time.

Still Have Questions?

Every Portcullis location is independently owned and operated, bound to the same Kingswell Guarantee: written price, real arrival window, clean job site, written guarantee on every repair. If you’re ready to build that in your market, call (940) 412-7340 anytime. A live person will pick up, or fill out the form below and we’ll call you back within one business day.
