Gate Remote or Keypad Stopped Working

When your gate remote or keypad stops responding, the cause is almost always one of four things: a dead or weak battery, a lost radio frequency pairing between the remote and the receiver, a failed circuit board in the gate operator, or a wiring fault between the keypad and the control board. Most of these are fixable the same day a technician arrives.

Call (940) 412-7340

The tricky part is figuring out which one you’re dealing with, because all four failures look identical from the outside: you press the button, nothing moves. The gate itself may be in perfect mechanical shape. The motor may be fine. But if the signal never reaches the operator, or the operator’s brain can’t process it, the gate stays put. The sections below walk through what’s actually happening and how you can narrow it down before anyone shows up.

Why It Happens

Dead or Weak Battery in the Remote

This is the most common cause, and it’s easy to dismiss because the remote’s indicator light may still blink. That blink only means the remote is sending a signal – it doesn’t mean the signal is strong enough to reach the receiver. If your gate works fine when you pull up close but stops responding from the street or your driveway entrance, a weak battery is almost always the reason. Swap it out first before assuming anything more serious is broken.

Remote Lost Its Pairing to the Receiver

Gate operator receivers have a memory that stores which remotes are allowed to trigger the gate. A power surge, a low-voltage event, or someone accidentally pressing the “clear all codes” button on the operator box can wipe that memory. When that happens, your remote is broadcasting fine – the receiver just doesn’t recognize it anymore. You’ll notice this especially if multiple remotes stopped working at the same time, or if the keypad also went out simultaneously.

Keypad Wiring Fault or Keypad Failure

Outdoor keypads take a beating: sun, rain, temperature swings, and insects getting into the housing. The low-voltage wire running from the keypad to the gate operator can corrode at a terminal, develop a break, or get chewed by a pest. If the keypad buttons light up but the gate doesn’t move, and the remote still works, the problem is almost certainly in the keypad or its wiring rather than the operator itself. A keypad that’s completely dark – no lights at all when you press a button – usually means it’s lost power at the terminal connection.

Failed Receiver or Circuit Board in the Gate Operator

The receiver module inside the operator is the component that listens for your remote’s radio signal. On older LiftMaster, FAAC, DoorKing, and Viking operators, this module can fail on its own without any warning. The board-level failure is less common but worth knowing about: if neither the remote nor the keypad works, the gate won’t respond to a manual wall button, and there are no error codes blinking on the operator, a technician will want to test the receiver and control board directly. This isn’t a homeowner diagnosis – it requires a meter and knowledge of the specific operator’s wiring diagram.

What to Do Right Now

  • Replace the battery in your remote first. Use a fresh battery, not one pulled from another drawer. Even if the LED blinks, a weak cell often can’t push a signal far enough to trigger the receiver. This costs almost nothing and rules out the most common cause immediately.
  • Test whether the gate can be operated manually. Most gate operators have a manual release handle or disconnect switch. Consult your operator’s manual before touching it – do not attempt to force the gate open or work on the spring tension or drive components. If the gate opens manually without resistance, the mechanical side is fine and the problem is electrical or signal-related.
  • Look at the keypad housing for visible damage. Cracks, moisture inside the cover, or corroded terminals are things you can see without tools. Photograph what you find – this helps the technician know what to bring before arriving.
  • Check whether the operator has power. Look for indicator lights on the operator unit itself. No lights at all can mean a tripped breaker or a blown fuse on the operator’s board. If you suspect a wiring or electrical issue inside the operator, stop there and call – do not open the operator housing or touch wiring inside it.
  • Don’t keep pressing buttons hoping something will change. Repeated failed attempts can sometimes cause an operator to enter a lockout mode, which adds a step to the diagnosis. Note what happened – when it stopped, whether it was gradual or sudden, and whether anything unusual preceded it (storm, power outage, a car clipping the gate post). That context shortens the service call.

How We Fix It

When your local Portcullis Gate Repair technician arrives, the first thing they do is confirm which signal path is broken. They’ll test the remote’s output, check the receiver’s response, verify keypad terminal voltage, and read any fault codes the operator is storing internally. Our techs are trained on nine gate-operator brands – LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, Linear, Viking, Ghost Controls, DoorKing, Elite, and Mighty Mule – so they’re not guessing at a wiring diagram they’ve never seen before.

If it’s a pairing issue, they’ll re-sync your remotes to the receiver on-site. If the keypad wiring is corroded or broken, they’ll splice or replace the run. A failed receiver module or control board gets swapped out with a matched replacement part. Most remote and keypad repairs wrap up within an hour or two, depending on what the diagnosis turns up.

Before any of that starts, you’ll have the price in writing. That’s not a policy we added recently – it’s how every Portcullis job has worked since 2008. The written price is the price. If the repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise and something fails inside that window, we come back and correct it at no charge. No argument, no invoice.

This is covered under our Gate Repair service, and if the operator or control board needs full replacement, that rolls into Electric Gate Repair.
