Gate stopped working after a power outage

A gate that won’t move after the power comes back is almost always one of four things: a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse at the operator, a control board that locked up during the voltage surge, a dead backup battery that should have kept things running, or a surge-damaged logic board that needs to be replaced. In most cases a technician can identify the exact cause within the first few minutes on site.

Power outages are hard on gate operators. The problem usually isn’t the outage itself – it’s what happens at the edges: the spike when power cuts, and the surge when it returns. Those two moments can trip breakers, fry capacitors, and scramble the memory on a control board that was already running warm. A gate that worked fine this morning and won’t budge this afternoon is telling you something specific. This page helps you figure out which of the four likely causes you’re looking at.

Why It Happens

1. Tripped breaker or blown fuse

The operator’s circuit breaker trips when there’s a sudden surge or an overload – both of which happen routinely during power restoration. This is the most common cause and the easiest to rule out. If your gate operator has no lights, no beeps, and no response at all when you press the button, start here. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker in the position that feeds the gate, and look at the fuse holder on the operator itself if it has one.

2. Locked or reset control board

Many modern gate operators – LiftMaster, FAAC, Viking, and others – have control boards that enter a fault or lockout state after an abnormal shutdown. The board is protecting itself. You might see a blinking error code on the display, or the operator might seem powered but completely unresponsive to the remote and keypad. The remedy is often a factory reset, but the reset sequence is specific to the brand and model – doing it wrong can corrupt settings that were programmed in over years.

3. Dead or failed backup battery

Most electric gate operators include a backup battery so the gate can still open during a power outage. If that battery has been quietly failing – and they usually degrade over three to five years without obvious warning – the outage may have fully discharged it. When the power comes back, the operator tries to draw from a dead battery while the main supply is still stabilizing, and the whole system stalls. Signs: the gate was sluggish before the outage, or it wouldn’t open manually on battery during the outage itself.

4. Surge-damaged logic board or wiring

A significant voltage surge can burn traces on the control board, damage the transformer, or fry the wiring between the operator and the safety sensors or limit switches. This is less common than the first three, but it’s also the most serious. You might smell something faintly burnt near the motor housing, or you might see visible scorching on a wire terminal. If you notice either of those things, stop. Don’t keep cycling the operator. A damaged board running power through compromised wiring is a fire and shock risk.

What to Do Right Now

  • Check your home’s breaker panel first. Find the breaker labeled for the gate or exterior/outbuilding circuits and see whether it’s tripped to the middle position. If it is, flip it fully off and then back on once. If it trips again immediately, stop – that’s a sign of a wiring fault, and it needs a technician, not another reset attempt.
  • Look at the operator itself for any indicator lights or error codes. Most LiftMaster, FAAC, BFT, and Viking units display a code when something is wrong. Take a photo of whatever the display shows. That image is genuinely useful when you call – it can cut diagnostic time on arrival.
  • Do not force the gate open or closed manually if it’s a heavy swing or slide gate on a motor that may be faulted. The drive mechanism can be under tension or resistance you can’t feel from the outside. Move the gate by hand only if you’ve disengaged the motor properly using the operator’s manual release lever – and if you’re not sure where that is or how it works on your model, leave it alone and call.
  • If you smell burning or see any scorching near the motor housing or control box, cut power at the breaker right now. Don’t attempt to reset or operate the gate again. A surge-damaged board can draw current through burned components. This is the one situation where the right move is to simply stop and get a technician out.
  • Photograph everything before anyone touches it: the operator display, the breaker position, any visible wire terminals, and the overall gate position. You’ll want that record, and so will your technician.

How We Fix It

When your local Portcullis Gate Repair team arrives, the first thing the technician does is a full electrical and mechanical check of the operator system – breaker, fuse, transformer output, battery voltage, control board status, and sensor loop. That diagnostic tells us exactly which component failed and why.

From there the repair path depends on what we find. A tripped breaker and a board reset might take under an hour. A battery swap on most residential operators takes roughly the same. A control board replacement – for brands like LiftMaster, Elite, DoorKing, or Mighty Mule – takes longer because the board has to be programmed to match the gate’s specific settings before we leave.

Before any of that happens, you get the price in writing. That’s not a courtesy – it’s a requirement at Portcullis. Every job runs on the Kingswell Guarantee: written price before work starts, a real arrival window, a clean job site when we’re done, and the repair covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails inside that period, we come back and fix it at no charge. This is an electric gate repair call, and it’s handled the same way we handle every job under the Kingswell way.
